Jesus is a member of the Trinity and and the Son of God, therefore He is God. He has always been and will always be. He came to earth and took a physical form so that he could be the perfect sacrifice to save the people from their sins. He is the Messiah prophesied about in the Old Testament, called the Christ. Jesus is the Greek form of the Hebrew name Joshua and means "the Lord is salvation" or "the Lord saves."
Jesus was born in Bethlehem in the reign of Caesar Augustus to Mary and Joseph. Upon his birth angels came to a group of shepherds and proclaimed the good news. Wise men came from the east to give gifts to the young Jesus as well. After hearing from these wise men that Jesus was born Herod grew jealous and gave commands to have all male children aged two and below in the area of Bethlehem killed. Upon hearing this news Joseph fled with his family to Egypt. After the death of Herod they returned and settled in Nazareth. At the age of twelve he went with his family to Jerusalem for the Passover. While he was there he went into the Temple and spoke to the teachers there. All those that heard him "were amazed at his understanding and his answers."
