Perea, often simply called "beyond the Jordan," was located east of the Jordan river. The people were mostly of Jewish decent and were ruled by Herod Antipas in the time of Jesus. Often people who were traveling between the Southern and Northern parts of Israel, and did not want to travel through Samaria, would have to pass through Perea.
