Shem was the son of Noah and the father of Elam, Asshur, Arpachshad, Lud, and Aram. Shem was 100 years old when he fathered Arpachshad two years after the flood. His brothers were Ham and Japheth. Shem and his wife were passengers on the ark during the Flood and, therefore, assisted in the repopulated of the land when the waters subsided. He was called "the father of all the children of Eber." Shem lived 600 years.

After the Flood, Noah grew a vineyard and one day he became intoxicated. His son Ham found his father passed out and naked in his tent. He left his father there and went and told his brothers. Shem, along with his Japheth covered Noah's nakedness with a garment. Noah discovered that Ham did nothing cursed Ham's son Canaan.
